This piece drives awareness of a skin disease – Podoconiosis (Podo) – prevalent  amongst barefoot workers on certain irritant red clay soil in highland areas of Africa, India, and Central America. This disease can be both prevented and treated by daily washing feet with soap and water regularly and wearing shoes. A pair of boots, combined with daily hygiene (costing less than $20) dramatically improves the prospects of Podo sufferers.

I have created this painting in collaboration with the Ethiopian NGO ‘Action on Podo’ (https://actiononpodo.com). This painting (and all the preparatory sketches) is for sale and over 50% of proceeds will be donated to this NGO and their remarkable work.
